Another appearance in Dublin, another fab show!  Loudon and audience in fine form. Loudon 'plugged' his albums 'Loudon Wainwright III' (1970) and 'T Shirt' (1976) during the show: he announced that he'd brought 15 vinyl copies of each LP with him to Dublin, to be sold after the show during his usual 'meet/greet/sign/lick' session.

Back to the concert, my only minor "complaint" is that more and more the volume of Loudon's guitar is going down during live shows these days - Turn It Up Mr W. and Mr. Soundman!

The Dublin show was taped for Irish radio (apparently directly from the soundboard), but so far I have not been able to find out for which program or even for which radio station.....

SET LIST

01. It Had To Be Her.  Oops, when I entered the venue with my Dublin pal Gary, the friendly promoter (Bren Berry) of the Vicar Street venue told us Loudon was already on stage! Darn!  We'd anticipated there would be a support act.  Not so.  Luckily, list member Debbie (who holds the record for entering venues where Loudon plays as punter #1 for the last few years!) was there to fill me in on what we had missed thus far.  Not much, about one minute at the most she told us.

02. The Last Man On Earth.  This gets better every time I hear it, and the song always seem to go down extremely well with the punters. Contender for Loudon's next single perhaps?  Then again, probably not since there's no record label for it. Here we have one of the greatest songwriters alive, and the man hasn't got a record deal.  What a world.

03. I'm Alright.  During the song (or during Loudon's spoken introduction, I can't remember) a mobile went off. Loudon: "Turn off that fucking cellphone..."

04. Missing You.  The penis song; includes the line: "His motto is, 'no nap, I'm crap.'"

05. Homeless.  Wonderful version!

06. He Said, She Said.

07. I Suppose.

08. Whatever Happened To Us?  A guy shouted, "Robbie Williams!" Loudon: "You're at the wrong gig!"

09. Tonya's Twirls.  Loudon: "It's important to win..."

10. Motel Blues.  Loudon:"These days I'm having a hard time getting room service!"

11. Bed.

12. The Swimming Song.  Audience request. Loudon: "I swam at the 40 Foot today!" This is a famous spot off the coast at Dunleary where only gentleman swim (ladies not allowed).

13. Summer's Almost Over.  Indeedy.

14. Surviving Twin.  After this song, somebody in the crowd asked about the '28 Days' film and how Loudon got on with Sandra Bullock on the film set. Loudon said she was fine but that he preferred somebody with a little more "attitude, like Courtney Love...."

15. I.D.T.T.Y.W.L.M.  Audience request. Went down extremely well with the Dublin crowd (personally I could do without this song, but it's hard to please everyone all the time I guess, I suppose).

16. Primrose Hill.  'Oh Dear' dept.: a lady in the audience asked Loudon *where* he would perform in Primrose Hill. Next question, please....

17. We'll Keep In Touch.

18. The Doctor.  The only sing-along tune of the night.

19. White Winos.

Encore #1

20. Between.

21. The Picture.

22. Surfing Queen.  Audience request. Loudon (commenting on a strange-looking plastic 'strap' on his left arm): "It's the world's largest nicotine patch!"

23. The Future.  [which went straight into:]

24. I Walked Through The Graveyard.

Encore #2

25. Down Drinking At The Bar. Several people had been asking/shouting for this one all night long.  Went down a storm, needless to say.

26. School Days.

After the show Loudon sold the 30 LPs in no time. An over-enthusiastic (and slightly tipsy) female tried to hang on to Loudon when he was trying to make his way back into his dressing room (a bouncer had to assist).

Backstage I had a short chat with Loudon "for the list."

We won't be seeing Loudon in Europe for the rest of 2000.  He told me he's still taking it easy and cutting down on gigs and touring.  He also told me (rather enthusiastically) that Rufus is working on his second LP and has in fact recorded "One Man Guy" (and not "The Swimming Song" as I incorrectly reported here some time ago).  Loudon: "Of course I don't know if they will use it or not at this stage." BTW, still no sign of a new record deal for Loudon on the horizon but he's "demo-ing" songs anyway.

I took one photo of Loudon backstage and then Bren Berry (the promoter) took two pics of Loudon and yours truly.

Loudon: "Is this for the list?"
Me: "Not necessarily..."
Loudon: "I don't mind really..."
Berry: "I read your review of the last Loudon show here at Vicar Street on the WWW." [Another visitor for Martin's Belfast site!].

Last but not least, when a couple (Irish friends of Loudon) entered the dressing room the conversation briefly veered towards Loudon's fans.

Me: "We even check out his socks!" So, I looked downwards and thus can exclusively reveal here that they were blue-striped!

Loudon then made arrangements to get into town for refreshments with his two friends, so we all went our separate ways into the Dublin night.  That's really all I can remember of the night (anything else, Debbie?).

Saluti!
