'ONE MAN GUY'
1993 - A 60 minute program which was apparently
made by a Dutch TV team.
In the program,
Loudon . . .
|
- |
visits his old school
and college |
|
- |
travels on a plane
(with 'that' song on the soundtrack) |
|
- |
meets some old friends |
|
- |
is featured in concert
(both in America and Holland) |
|
- |
proudly shows off
his daughter Lucy (who is older than his own sister - "You
work it out" he quips) |
|
- |
is interviewed with Rufus (and plays Red Guitar
on the piano) |
|
- |
chats candidly about
his life and also plays some songs specially for the film crew. |
Also featured
are interviews with Martha Wainwright (who at one point sings
a very engaging version of 'Hitting You'), and an interview with
his ex-wife - Kate McGarrigle who reckons Loudon got some of
his best material from their stormy 5 year marriage. (I really
like the way they cut from that particular comment straight to
Loudon singing 'I'm Alright').
The concert clips
show him in typical cheeky form, eg. singing 'The Doctor', then
following it with 'He Said, She Said', commenting "Speaking
of doctors, I want to do some songs about sex now - somehow I
relate the two things. Well, sex is kind of a surgical procedure,
if you think about it."
He talks about
how his mannerisms on stage began, saying that originally he
was so nervous, that he'd close his eyes, screw his face up,
- anything to get the songs out. When he noticed the audience
reaction to this, he "kind of exaggerated it."
Even then, he
was making jokes about getting older. "Y'know, in the old
days, I used to go out and get drunk, get laid, y'know, try to
sleep with somebody. Can't do that anymore", he says (laughing).
Here's a full
list of the songs that were featured on the soundtrack (some
were only played for a few seconds).

'One Man Guy' |
The 'Casey' song
is a very old tune that one of his friend recalls, and they stand
in some alley and play about 30 seconds of it. Apparently it
refers to the sound of the passing trains.
One interesting
character was friend Syd Straw, who chatted about her admiration
for Loudon' music. She played a verse from 'One Man Guy', and
later on, talked of her admiration for the song 'Your Mother
And I' and sang a verse or two from it.
This fascinating
programme is a 'must see' for any Loudon fan and certainly a
good starting point for potential new ones. Unfortunately, it has hardly been shown
anywhere, - just Holland, Australia and some parts of the USA.
It's not even
available to buy on video and so I'm absolutely indebted to people
I've met on the Mailing List for allowing me to see a copy. |
