LW3 - the Albums

Gary Mc Kernan   30/Jul/2002:08:26:48
Hey Joe. Where you goin with that gun in your hand?
Just noticed your comments on the guestbook. Martin Maguire at this
site has a comprehensive list of Loudon's songs. The only song I can
think of that you might mean is a song from the Grown Man album which
isn't too recent. "There was a baby on a plane/ Maybe she was 2/ And
she was smiling at me/ I was not sure what to do." Hope this helps.

Joe   29/Jul/2002:15:49:40
I really like wainewright! Hes unique and intresting,I just have a few
questions! Where can I get a list of his songs? I ve only heard one and
cant remember the name! It pretty new! He was riding on a plane and
write thins song! Any takers? I would really like to get more info on
this song,Somebody e-mail me on this info! Thanks a lot

Loudon Wainwright III could very well be my favorite artist. I have
such a wide range of music and yet I always go back to listening to
Loudon. One of my hobbies is collecting and trading live music. I have
some live shows of Loudons about 13 in all. but as you well know, live
recordings of his are hard to come by. If there is anyone out there who
would be interested in trading, please let me know.
I love your site by the way.

Martin Hennighan 08/Jun/2002:23:55:11
I don't know what I can say that isn't totally unoriginal. To me
your music is the best thing that has happened since the invention of
sliced bread! Seriously, many thanks indeed for the most wonderful
entertainment over the years.

Very best wishes to you and yours.

Tony   05/Jun/2002:04:32:43
Great site - pity LW himself seems not to give you guys too much
recognition in his shows (based on my reading of your reviews).
Keep up the good work !

DH   23/May/2002:21:08:52
Obviously Guinness has more than one n.P.S. Best ever concert was at
The Theatre Royal Glasgow early 80's or late 70's.If anything was
sublime that was it.

Davie H   23/May/2002:21:05:50
The only downside of Loudon is the fact that he gave me a can of Skol
lager at the '76 bash.It was probably the worst thing I have ever
drank. The positive side of this story is that I turned to Guiness and
have never looked back.

David Hughes   11/May/2002:19:16:06
Make that the Pavilion Glasgow. Is Rufus a good chanter?

Mickey   05/May/2002:16:55:41
Just saw Loudon last night in Somerville, Mass., Great show!!!! This
was my fifth time seeing him. One of the highlights last night was
IDTTYWLM (I don't think that your wife likes me), great accoustic
version. Lots of stuff from his new CD.

Davie Hughes   03/May/2002:19:58:15
First saw Loudo at the Apollo Glasgow 1976,last saw Loudo at The
Playhouse Glasgow April 2002.He's like a good bottle of wine methinks!

Mike Thompson   30/Apr/2002:13:03:25
Hi. I've been lucky to have seen Loudon in concert twice. Once at the
Arts Theatre October 11th, 1992. The first was at the Whitla Hall at
Queens Uni. October 7th, 1979 when I recall he sang "Dead Skunk" in a
reggae style, "Dread Skunk".
Both were memorable gigs from a true entertainer.
More in hope than anything else, would anyone out there happen to have
a copy of the set lists of either ( or both) shows?

Dean Short   28/Apr/2002:00:12:12
I've been nurtured by Loudon's Music since the early seventies and it
still continues to feed my soul today. I saw him in concert for the
first time at the Bottom Line in New York City way back in June of '75.
It remains for me one of the funniest and satsisfying experiences
musically I have ever had. I saw him again in '97 at the Temple of Music
and Art in Tucson, Arizona. That experience too was an hilarious and
joyful time for me. I look forward to hearing you again someday. Thank
YOU Loudon for the genius and humor you put into lyrics and melody. I
wish you all the success and happiness you can st

I was at Croydon on Tuesday, with a seat in the front row, wearing of
course my 1987 tour T-shirt, a little posey i know.
Support from Peter Blegvad who was much better than the last time i saw
him with Loudon at the Union Chapel a few years ago. Both of them are
not really suited to these large concert hall venues, but see them when
you can, so take it as it comes.Lots of songs from the last C.D.
The encore was a very nice duet of one of Peters songs about his
daughter when she was three.
Also went to Saturday night at UCL Bloomsbury, where Loudon did a gig
last year, its a nice college theatre, small enough to be intimate with
good sound. Some different songs from both of them, but a shorter encore
than before, same song though,Peter was on a radio prog at 10.45.
The big surprise was who was drinking in the bar at half time, none
other than DAMON HILL ex F1 champion, i had a couple of words, he is a
big Loudon fan, and had a seat right in the middle downstairs. Also in
was Mark Ellen the

Just popped in to check out the site.....great! (but then I knew it
would be) How about a site for Crosby Stills Nash and Young next?

Gary Mc Kernan   24/Apr/2002:15:38:52
Great site, Martin. I've been a Loudon fan since he did Jasper Carrot
many moons ago. I'm totally gutted about his non-appearance in Belfast
this April. Just to set the cat amongst the pigeons, we all know and
respect Loudons' role as the truthteller (warts and all. I'm actually
suprised we haven't heard a song discussing Rufus's homosexuality. From
what I hear he is evidently NOT a titman.

robo32   21/Apr/2002:21:22:10
been here before, still agreat site my first encounter with loudo was
driving home late one night, put the car in the garage, and i heard this
song on the radio everybody sounded drunk.[which song your asking].song
was [wine with dinner].hooked.

pruitt   19/Apr/2002:02:31:54
hi, i don't know why, but my dad wants me to contact Loudon Wainwright
III and ask him about the song "the man who couldn't cry". can anyone
help me out?

Bosie Martin   17/Apr/2002:04:29:48
Great to know there are so many other LWIII fans. Looking forward to
seein him in the US in May. I'd travel (for the 3rd time) back to the
UK to see him if I had to. Great guy I've loved his music for over 30
years... Guess that makes ME old. Most of it on LP. Keep listening.
Regards from the US -&- Cheers!

Looking forward to the Colston Hall gig on Thursday.
I'ts my birthday present from my wife, bless her.
Does anyone else get the feeling that LW111 is a bit like the "Truman
Show"? We have been watching his life for over thirty years now!
"With all it's aspects of greek tradgedy it's better than a soap"!!!

Adi Kuhlmann   12/Apr/2002:22:29:31
Hi,
it's a very nice website and I like it.
I like most the songs of the second album, because sometimes he seems
to sing about me and my life.
Now I have a copy of a song called "I'M GONNA KILL THAT BILL GATES GUY"
I think it's a song from a live-preformance of LW III., but I really
don't know and I can't find the song in the discography. Can you help
me?
Adi

Bill Hamilton   12/Apr/2002:16:20:06
Hi Martin

Just thought I'd let you know that I am going to see LW3 in Croydon on
Tuesday. Looking forward to it!

We must arrange that pint (or several) soon - I fancy a visit to the
seaside when the good weather (!) kicks in.

Look after yourself ...

Charlie   09/Apr/2002:23:47:22
Ive been a Loudo fan for years, why he hasnt been given the status of
Dylan bewilders me. His music and lyrics can make me laugh and cry, I
dont want to sound like a nut, but his life seems to reflect mine so
much. His honesty seeps through, you cant help but like the guy. Im off
to see him next week, in Manchester. I cant wait. My wife likes Robbie
Williams (Im sorry, its a fact) How can anyone compare Loudo with that
pretentious prat.
My other passion is Leonard Cohen, a true poet of song. I think time
will put these two giants (my opinion) in their rightful place. If, by
any chance, Loudo reads this I say, your music speaks, those with
intelect and ears will hear.
I know all of you reading this are already Wainwright fans, and I
salute your taste.
Last man on earth is a classic, "Homeless" can make me cry.
(Im a 43yr old Firefighter, that says something for his talent)
Oh my friends, enjoy Loudo as much as I do.
P.S. Have you noticed, hes a bit.... well.. strange.
Cant wait for t

So, who read the news today (Oh, Boy) LW3 1 Robbie Williams 0

After much wrangling in the courts Loudon's lawyers have won a victory
against Robbie Williams.
25% of all song royalties from "Jesus in a camper van" from Robbie to
the loundon camp.
All new pressings of "Iv'e been expecting you" to NOT contain the
song "Jesus in a camper van"
I have no objection to RWs (he can carry a tune) but it's nice to see
the small chap win.

Just a final word . . .

The word is (UNCONFIRMED) that there *may* be a UK tour by Loudon
Wainwright in April 2002. You heard it here first folks!!!

Martin 'White Winos' Song Nomination 20/Dec/2001:08:17:27
Many thanks to Doug Hand for bringing the news of Loudon's song
nomination to my ears. Below is a bit more about the news item. Also,
click on the web link (above) to see the actual page!!!

"Loudon Wainwright's 'White Winos' is one of the four nominations for
the Best Original Song in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - to be
announced on February 11th, 2002."

'Dreaming' by Loudon Wainwright III
(From the 1995 album 'Grown Man' and also featured in the movie '28
Days')

I`d rather be dreaming than living
Living`s just too hard to do
It`s chances not choices
Noises not voices
A day`s just a thing to get through
Living`s just too hard to do

I`d rather be dreaming than talking
There`s nothing to hear or to say
With ears covered mouth closed
The world is opposed
Nothing gets in or away
There`s nothing to hear or to say

I`d rather be dreaming than thinking
Thoughts are small comfort to me
Dreams might be pretend
But at least dreams end
And I just can`t stop thinking you see
Thoughts are small comfort to me

I`d rather be dreaming than sleeping
Just sleeping you`re just as well dead
In dreams I can fly
In dreams I don`t die
That`s why I lie here in this bed
Just sleeping you`re just as well dead

I`d rather be dreaming

I have just been listening to Mike Harding on Radio 2, and Loudon's
song WHITE WINOS is up for nomination as song of the year
on the proggrame, and people are being asked to vote.
I did not get the web address, but assume it would be the
usual BBC site.
Anybody out there want to start the voting off. Doug Hand

Hello there. Everytimei watch 28 Days, I hear that song in the
background after that girl dies; how living is just too hard to do. I
really really want those lyrics because I am in a big rut now and I
think that is how i feel. I am not sure, but i think its Dreaming by
Loudon Wainwright III. Can anyone help me out by emailing me the
lyrics? I have searched a great deal on the internet and I havent had
any luck. Thanks! 3 cathy

Congratulations on a very interesting and useful website.I first heard
Loudon on the John Peel show in the early 1970s (1971?).I still have
the very poor quality recording I made of the studio session he did.I
first saw him live a few months late (1972?) when he was the support
act for the Buffy St.Marie tour.Poor old Buffy was a bit of a one hit
wonder and Loudon just seemed to take over the whole show.I still have
the programme which compares him to Dylan!I now have about 20 albums in
various formats, plus tapes of studio sessions on Radios 1,3 and 4, and
try to go to any UK performances. After 30 years of LW3 I find it
staggering that he can still produce songs such as White Winos, probably
my all time favourite.I would also say that his live performances, such
as the Cambridge Folk Fesival 1999,are better than ever.
Keep up the good work.I no longer feel as though I am a member of a
secret society!

Lawson   20/Oct/2001:01:52:03
someone asked about the loudon version of my girl with john h.
I have a copy of same.
Does anyone out there have a copy of Final exam?
it is the one album I am missing.
A copy on tape would be appriciated.
I am a dilletente at this web/net stuff so : help!

Thanks D (McFadden) for your wordy comment. It was very much
appreciated.

Yes, the NY Times article was exceptionally good, very human, loved the
bit where Loudon bought that wheelbarrow (and not the plastic one, even
though it was cheaper).

I remember the free concert in the L.A Plaza (July '99). It was filmed
by CNN TV at the time and some scenes were included in a report about
Loudon a month later. (Video stills can be see on the 'CNN Report'
link under Television which is top left).

Thanks again for your posting.

Continuation.....(got cut off by the server)

....or rapt in attention by turns.

The ability to be humorous w/out being excessively jokey, to be heavy
w/out being pretentious, to be melancholy w/out being depressing -
these are considerable gifts, methinks.
Rare and wonderful stuff! -&- a big inspiration in my own songwriting
experiments.

A general head's up:

There was a really good feature in the New York Times today (10/14) on
Loudon Wainwright. A well-written, thoughtful piece.

And a general comment, for no good reason:

Being somewhat of a young'un, the only time I've seen Loudon perform
was in Los Angeles a couple years back. I was working for a dreadful
social services agency in a blighted area of LA close to downtown. Some
city agency or another organized a series of lunch-time concerts to
soothe the harried brains of office workers in the financial district.
A number of really fantastic musicians and bands played over the course
of the summer.
Anyhoo, saw Loudon perform (not having been familiar with his stuff) in
this downtown square - and it was probaly the finest performance I've
seen any solo performer give. The diverse crowd made up of investment
bankers, secretaries, advertising copy-writers, bottle-and-can-
collectors, disillusioned social workers, and the happily unemployed
were singing along

Hi Martin,
It's Ags Connolly here. We met at the Bloomsbury. My modem's
been down until now, so I couldn't get on here, but I thought the show
was great, and it was nice to meet you too! Unfortunately, the next
night I went and got drunk and totally forgot to tape the John Peel
show. I think you said you were recording it, so if that's the case I'd
be happy to pay you for a copy, especially if he did 'No Sure Way', the
new one. Whatever he did, I'm dying to get hold of it! Get back to me.
Cheers Ags.

I would like to compliment you on your excellent website. And I must
say that it thrills me to find another fan who finds 'tip that
waitress' among his all-time favourite songs. Compassion with those who
struggle in life in a very humoristic and truthfull way!

Peter O'Reilly   09/Oct/2001:12:36:54
I'm also a fan of 'fear of flying' and I still have a copy of the album
around somewhere. It was recently returned to me by a friend. She'd
borrowed it twenty years or so ago.

Karl Schubert   06/Oct/2001:19:55:39
I appreciate this Belfast Website so much. All the work that has gone
into it so that we, the fans can enjoy it. Excellent effort! Keep up
the spirit and Loudon´s music. Karl

Dragonfly   04/Oct/2001:15:28:55
My big sister bought a couple of LW3 albums back in the 70's. The only
one I really remember is FINAL EXAM. I've always enjoyed this album a
lot. I learned each song backward and forward. (A friend and I even
re-wrote the lyrics to "Fear of Flying" to capture the terror we
experienced as passengers in our friend, Annette's car.)

Imagine my disappointment to learn that LW3 himself doesn't like this
one and that it's not available on CD (and likely won't be). I don't
know his other material (which I'm sure is good) but would love to get
this one on CD. My sister's old vinyl album is very worn from (my)
repeated playings.

Any ideas on how I can get this one on CD? Does anyone have a clean
copy on vinyl?

Drop me a line, I'd love to hear from another fan who likes this album.

Pasco Hearn   30/Sep/2001:19:57:27
Love the site.

I just went to see Louden at the Bloomsbury Theatre and loved it. It's
my Mum who played him to me when I was little, and so I grew up
listening to him. Mainly 'Attempted Moustache' and his first album,
with 'School Days' at the beginning.

Saw him in Shepherd's Bush in 1999 for the first time, it was mad to
actually see him because I hadn't really thought he was still touring.
I only saw he was playing the Bloomsbury the day before, when I was
flicking around these sites. Anyway, I was the guy who pulled out an LP
copy of his 'Dead Skunk' album. I'd been searching for some of his
albums in record stores in London, but could only find that one and 'T-
shirt'. Would really like my own copies of the two I grew up listening
to. Anyway, he signed his beard and I was happy.

Looking forward to his next trip to London!

Pasco

Hey

Great news about the London gig and thanks for mentioning it on your
website Martin, because I would NEVER have known otherwise!!!

No adverts in the press . . . how did we live without the internet and
websites to keep us informed? We'll HAVE to have a big 'get together',
a 'gathering of the loudheads'. It's up to you Martin, c'mon get
something organised!!! :)

Hi, i've been a Loudo fan for a couple of years, but only just found
this site. As most of us now, Loudo is probably the finest songwriter
alive, and my absolute hero. I went to the Monday Jazz Cafe gig last
year and have a ticket for the Bloomsbury. Would love to hear from
others going to the same show.

Hi Martin!

Tonight I've been pouring over this incredible site, having followed
the link Karman gave on your Don McLean message board!

OH MY GOD!!! This site is so BEAUTIFUL!! I find everything so
interesting, and I know that THIS is an artist I must get into.
Specially as you have such impeccable taste! I'll check out Loudon's
music and post here again to say what I think when I've absorbed enough
of it. Thanks for introducing me to this artist! :)

Again... this site is amazing. I would say "unparalleled" were it not
for your two, exquisite Don Mclean sites! You have a genius for
providing information and presenting it in the most wonderful manner
possible. Absolutely marvellous!!!

You're the best. I'm so impressed with this site and with you. :)

Kudos!!!!!
Love SJ!

I first heard Loudon about 1972-3 when Dead Skunk was playing on the
radio and I must admit that it really appealed to my warped sense of
humour. Over the years I collected LP's and then Cd's to the point I
have a complete collection. I have managed to subvert both of my
daughters to the point they are greater fans than I am. LW111 was
supposed to tour Australia in April this year and of course we booked
tickets and then the tour was cancelled no explanations, a great
disappointment for us. I did see LW111 live back in the early 80;s in
Sydney on the same bill as Sonny Terry and Brownie Magee and it was a
great show. Well all I can hope for is another tour that wont be
cancelled.
I do like the web site good content and I will visit again

Great site. I learned a lot about a performer that I had forgotten
about back in the "70s. I know only one other person in my area who
ever heard of Loudon Wainwright III so I may have a hard time finding
any recordings locally. I intend to check out more of his music. Thanks
for the site.

Hi folks,
I've been a fan for a couple of years now, but when you live in Germany
(as I do) and ask people for LWIII the only thing you get to hear is
a "errrrr... who??" So I'm glad to have found this page to be kept
updated. No chance to see him live in Germany, but I would even go to
the UK if I had the possibility.
Keep up the good work, have fun, take care! Good page :-))
Best wishes from Hameln

Hi people, Being a booted blue jeaned guitar thumping guy from Scotland
way back in the 70's. I discovered Loudon's song Samson and the Warden
and never looked back. Now we have the internet an abundance of
Loudon's songs can be downloaded for free, but spare a thought for the
guy. BUY the albums and this will keep Loudon writing more great songs
for us.
It amazes me how many people have never heard of Loudon WainwrightIII,
but everywhere I go I make sure the do, especially in Holland, where I
live now. So everyone, spread the word..
Harry..

know that since you think Loudon is so wonderful, I'll download some of
his stuff and check him out... What little I've heard is very clever
and if you've bothered to devote a web page to him, there must be lots
of great stuff out there that I've never heard.

Once again, this is a fantastic site - it's just so PRETTY... You're a
genius!

Love ya,
Karman

Does anyone know where I can get hold of these books in Australia? I
can buy the first online (at almost $100 (for second hand books!), inc
postage that's out of my league), anyone that has a copy to sell,
please contact me.
a) The Loudon Wainwright Song Book
b) More Fabulous Songs

I'd also like to add that I think it's pretty funny that so many 'fans'
don't know how to spell LoudOn WainWright's name...you guys need to
listen to "They spelled my name wrong again" from Career Moves.

Hi everybody.
I live in London and have just read about the "one man guy" tv programme
from 1993 about Loudon.
Does anyone know where/how to get it?
Is anyone interested in maybe making a copy for me?
Of course I'd pay postage,etc...
Please get in touch if you can help me out.

Well, the right one maybe.

Gentlemen (Ladies?Whatever?) I just stumbled across your LWIII page.
Great stuff! In these days when the 'biz' is obsessed with every
scratch and fart of more-or-less talentless nonentities, I raise a
glass (any excuse!) to anyone who champions the cause of those real
talents who have done their best to entertain us for many a moon now
with scant reward. So, more power to your elbow. And three cheers to
those who appreciate the songwriting prowess of such as Mr. Wainwright
(Gawd bless 'ee, zur!), Richard Thompson, Kate and Anna McGarrigle,
Aimee Mann, Bill Nelson and XTC. To mention but a few who should get
more of a mention.

Thank you, God, for LWIII. (Sorry, Louden, for all that heartache;
but thank you for writing about it with your original, poignant, funny,
honest, witty, personal, universal panache.) There's nobody like you
out there in the music world. You have created your own genre.
I've heard Louden in concert a few times. He is an extraordinary
performer. Some friends complain that he is sexist, homophobic, etc. I
think that totally misses the point. His songs don't put down anyone
so much as they illustrate the pain that his unrelenting viewpoint, his
hedonism, his machoism, and his priviledge have created in his life.
They also convey the drive for pleasure in an eloquent, yet
straightforward way. Most any adult can relate to his situations. They
don't exploit anyone; he always points the finger at himself. Thank
you, Louden.

Wainwright III. But you lot will.....

Could somebody please copy Primrose Hill for me?

doug hand   01/May/2001:21:17:15
You are all quite right, this is the best site.
I have been a follower since the early 1970's since hearing him on
John Peel's radio show.I have all the vinyl and all the C.D.S and also
lots of promo stuff on both formats, the latest of which is a PROMO tape
copy of Grown Man from Virgin, aquired in a charity shop for a pound.
I also have a large collection of concert posters, B+W publicity photos
and an ever growing collection of seven inch singles and concert tapes.
Keep up the good work, hopefully a new C.D. will be coming soon.

Dreaming on the movie after the death. Can't find the lyrics or which
album it is on from the website.

Although I'm old enough to have discovered Loudon with his first album,
I discovered him only 2 years ago. Luckily I was introduced to "Grown
man". I was instantly addicted, and I still listen to the CD
constantly. I moved onto "Little Ship" and finally had the great
privilege to see Loudon last year, bringing 5 friends along with me. I
was so in awe seeing and hearing him in the flesh! I purchased "Social
Studies" and got him to autograph it. I told him how I love "Grown Man"
and he said that this new CD is quite a different flavor. He's right,
of course. I still think he's the best singer/songwriter I have ever
encountered. He puts into words and music all of the guilt, sadness,
giddiness, disgust, cynicism, and wonder of being a fallible human. And
it feels so good hearing it coming from him!
Thanks for the wonderful discography. I've got my music shopping list
all set up for me now. I just hope that Loudon still receives proceeds
from the sale of these CDs. Knowing

Hi Loudon, will you be coming downunder soon? I hope so.

David Morgan   05/Apr/2001:12:42:07
It's been a while since I last searched for a Loudon page, it looks as
though I've found a good one! I first heard Loudon in the seventies on
a sight'n'sound concert which I recorded, I treasured that tape for
years but it was eventually lost, recorded over, trodden on or
whatever. Time has come to buy a few albums, I ocassionally look in
the Ls or Ws or folk sections of the CD racks in W H Smiths or Virgin
but have never seen any Loudon albums, where can I buy them?
P.S. One of my favourites from that concert went....'we used to be in
love, now we are in hate' 'you used to say I came too early, but it was
you who came too late' 'thats a whole lotta crap about a tender trap'
'what it is is a suicide snare'..........is this the Suicide Song
because I must have it!

Well done on an excellent page. Full of everything you need to know
about Mr Wainwright. only thing is i feel very old, having bought album
II on it's release. never mind life would be less enjoyable without his
music.lets all push for the bbc to release all his concerts, especially
the two sight and sound gigs from the mid 70s. keep up the good work.

Louden's music has the ability to make me laugh and also to
cry. I have seen the great man 3 times (Leeds Irish Centre and
Leeds City Varieties) shook his hand got an autograph and had
my photo taken with him . The greatest singer songwriter the
world has ever seen. When is he touring in 2001?

I thought that I was Loudons biggest fan! I heard him in '75 on the
Whistle Test(I get the Blues). I knew I'd like him when my mother
turned over the Sight and Sound Concert in 1978 during Kick in the Head.
Seen him over 30 times and have all the usual stuff on vinyl and CD but
the best concert was the first, Leeds Uni '79.
Nice to know that through all the lonely years the mans talent was
being recognised too by others.

Is anyone interested in doing some good old fashioned tape trading? (I
don't have a computer at home, so I can't burn CDs.) I have tons of
unreleased/live LWIII stuff from the early 70s to the mid-90s. I'm
looking for his most recent songs -- stuff like "Bed" and "Homeless."
Let me know - thanks!

Alex   14/Feb/2001:19:04:03
Love the web-site. Contents spot-on, structure excellent - everything
works!

Here's a question - Several years ago, Loudon guest-hosted an edition
of 'Radio2 Country' on the BBC. He played a marvellous selection of his
favourite country tracks. Does anyone, by an absolute miracle, have a
listing for this show?

john   10/Feb/2001:18:46:16
Great site Martin, easily the best I've seen yet. A big hello to
fellow "Rattlin Squad" members if you see this, we keep Loudon alive
and kicking every year at the "Rat's Supper", along with Rabbie of
course......Booblar.

Sid Management Training and Outdoor Pursuits 04/Feb/2001:19:36:15
I first discovered LWIII on a BBC Bank Holdiday Special series of
programmes called Words and Music in 1994. The programme was about
songwriters and each featured artist explained how their song came to
be written and what inspired it, then performed it accoustically in the
studio.
Loudon performed Thanksgiving, and I loved the line about "its now our
kids who spill the milk, and our turn to want to kill them".
I finally got a couple of his CDs from my local library last week, and
I love Social Studies.
I saw his highlights at Cambridge last year and would love to see him
live.
I think your site is exellent.

there are so many Loudo fans, but I could'nt find you. And if your out
there Whitepants, we don't seem so different after all.

PeterC   19/Jan/2001:22:24:17
Great, clean, site. Top work. I agree with all the preceding comments
on Loudon's originality and talent; so much better and more valid than
the meaningless pap churned out by the "artistes" of today. OK, so I
have no clue as to what half his lyrics mean but, hey, that makes them
more fun. Plus I like it that he's a cheeky monkey. I can even forgive
him for screwing up "Talking New Bob Dylan" at Celtic Connections in
Glasgow May 98 - must have been the beery fumes.
I got "Attempted Mustache" for £3.99 on CD last week - is this a record
(no, a record is a circulkar poice of black vinyl..

Bootleg / copies of videos (e.g. Dutch TV 1993) - how can I get these
rarities?

Keep healthy.

underrated songwriting geniuses still writing, singing and touring

There is no one to touch the absolute brilliance of Loudon Wainwright

Keep up the great work Martin,

Mightily impressed that the man has not been forgotten or overlooked. He
is a great talent and some of his words have become part of my list of
comments on the world, rarely understood by others because they are
totally out of context. Great to see his old stuff being reissued and
available.

I'm a fan since 'History'. Saw him in Cork in, can't remember, circa
1992? It was rivetting stuff. I haven't seen him since. I suppose
I'm lazy. He has influenced my own song-writing. I never meet Loudon
fans. They tend to be a lot older than me. Is he coming to Ireland in
2001?

Hey, great to find your page(s). As a longtime Loudonhead I will
consider it a resourse to music's "Mr. Underated." I last saw Loudon

so I hope he comes back soon so I can get the taste of that show
out of my mouth. Keep up the good work...gW

Hey John

Thanks for signing the ole guestbook. I love your comments. Believe
it or not, while you were signing the book, I was online, doin' a bit
of drunken surfing too.

Re your questions:

Loudon was last in Wales in November '99 (at the Beaufort Theatre, Ebbw
Vale). He seems to do a major UK tour every two years, mainly around
October, November, so keep your eyes out for more info coming up to
this time next year. Hopefully he'll make Cardiff this time.

has anyone heard loudo's cover of "MY GIRL" with John Hiat?

Yep, sure have, and it's a GREAT version too. Loudon RARELY does cover
versions. His version really gets the 'Loudon treatment'.

I also remember that Cambribge Folk Festival appearance. I think it
was about 1979? And I've always LOVED 'Vampire Blues', though in those
days I never really understood that line "I love you baby, when you're
ripe and ready on the rag".

What a sheltered childhood I had :-)))

By far the most talented songwriter and singer to date. I mean it
though and it's hard to say because I love Dylan and John Prine so much
too. It boggles my mind that he is not a hero to many more, as the
above mentioned are. I ask people I meet who like folk music if they
have heard of him and very few have. When I do meet a fan I am
instantly a friend of theirs (it has only happened twice.

Hi Martin!
I'm glad to bookmark your site again. Just before Christmas, I
lost all of my files when I tried to compress Drive C: to gain more
diskspace, and your page was one of them. But...now I have it back!
It's great as always,
