Discography

LW3 - the Albums

I wish to thank Lawson Skuse for providing additional information and very informative notes throughout this Discography page.   My comments are in Green type - Martin

Loudon Wainwright III - The Albums

The Discography is set out thus:

  • Year: 1970
  • Album title: Loudon Wainwright III
  • Record label: Atlantic
  • Catalogue number: SD 8260
  • Country of sale: (US) and
  • Format: Vinyl

If no country of sale appears then the item is for worldwide export.

I have added a few Cassette catalogue numbers here and there but these are noted from my collection.

I cannot find the numbers for any other cassette albums anywhere else without going to the record companies and I am not quite that obsessional. (YET!)

A number of albums were also released on good old 8 Track (I recently got outbid on an 8 Track of "T Shirt" on Ebay!) but I will not go to the trouble of listing these numbers unless someone out there sends them to me.

I have also added a few pertinent note benes here and there to show / make an interesting point.

I have not bothered inserting a picture of an album or it's track list if it is an identical re-release.

 Loudon Wainwright III

1970 - 'Loudon Wainwright III'
Atlantic SD 8260 (US) - Vinyl
Atlantic 2400 103 (UK) -Vinyl

First album for Loudon.  Acoustic - just Loudon with voice and guitar, and 11 original songs.

Only available on CD (along with the second album) on 'The Atlantic Recordings' release.

01 - School Days 07 - Four Is A Magic Number
02 - Hospital Lady 08 - I Don't Care
03 - Ode To A Pittsburg 09 - Central Square Song
04 - Glad To See You've Got Religion 10 - Movies Are A Mother To Me
05 - Uptown 11 - Bruno's Place
06 - Black Uncle Remus

 Album II

1971 - 'Album II'
Atlantic SD 8291 (US) -Vinyl
Atlantic K40272 (UK) -Vinyl

Another acoustic album, only additions being a piano on some tracks.  Also a harmonica, played by Saul Brody)

Again, only available (along with the first album) on
'The Atlantic Recordings' release.

01 - Me And My Friend The Cat 07 - Samson And The Warden
02 - Motel Blues 08 - Plane Too
03 - Nice Jewish Girls 09 - Cook That Dinner Dora
04 - Be Careful There's A Baby In The House 10 - Old Friend
05 - I Know I'm Unhappy / Suicide Song /       Glenville Reel 11 - Old Paint
06 - Saw Your Name In The Papers 12 - Winter Song

NB: A very limited amount of albums that differed from the general release found their way into shops on both sides of the Atlantic.

The difference was that instead of "Cook That Dinner Dora", song number nine on the general release, "Drinking Song" appeared on it instead. This was despite the sleeve and the label stating that the track was indeed "Cook That Dinner Dora"

Also, it contains a couple of minutes of studio chatter preceding track number eleven, "Old Paint".

I do not know why these copies were released and can only surmise that the left hand of the studio did not know what the right hand of the manufacturers were doing and that neither of them knew what the distributors were doing.

I have never seen a copy and know of only one person that has a copy, Doug Ashford from the LW3 Yahoo list, the lucky bugger, who also informed me about the studio chatter.

While the 1999 re-release of the limited edition "The Atlantic Recordings" (see below) contains "Drinking Song" as a "bonus" track, it is worth remembering that the track was "held over" in 1971 and placed on Album III in 1972.

Several songs originally written for the 1986 Jasper Carrott TV series surface here.  'Harry's Wall' (one of my personal favourites), and 'You Don't Want To Know' (about the icy British winters).  There's Loudon's sideswipe at pop videos (TSDHAV), and 'Therapy' is one helluva song!

03 - TSDHAV [This Song Don't Have A Video] 10 - Me And All The Other Mothers

Instead of the usual practice of giving "Bonus Tracks"  on re-releases, this one actually omits two numbers,  "Revenge", track 5 from "Fame and Wealth ", and "Out of  This World", track 9 from "I'm Alright"

 History

1992 - 'History'
Virgin/Charisma V2-86416 (US) -CD
Virgin CDV 2703 (UK & Europe) -CD
Virgin TCV 2703 - Cassette

A highly acclaimed album.  Mostly a very 'serious' record, this one examines relationships: father and son, brother and sister, man and woman, with his own son etc.  An absolutely absorbing album and one of my all-time favourites.  A beautiful and indispensible album.

01 - People In Love 08 - Between
02 - Men 09 - Talkin' New Bob Dylan
03 - The Picture 10 - So Many Songs
04 - When I'm At Your House 11 - 4 X 10
05 - The Doctor 12 - A Father And Son
06 - Hitting You 13 - Sometimes I Forget
07 - I'd Rather Be Lonely 14 - A Handful Of Dust

 Career Moves

1993 - 'Career Moves'
Virgin CDV 2718 -CD
Virgin TCV 2718 -Cassette

Compiled from two consecutive nights at the Bottom Line in New York, - with Loudon in excellent voice.  First rate sound quality, and an ideal 'introduction' to Loudon.

And it includes my all-time favourite - 'Tip That Waitress'.

01 - Road Ode 10 - The Swimming Song
02 - I'm Alright 11 - Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder
03 - Five Years Old 12 - Happy Birthday Elvis
04 - Your Mother And I 13 - Unhappy Anniversary

09 - TSMNWA
[They Spelt My Name Wrong Again]
18 - Career Moves

 One Man Guy

1994 - 'One Man Guy: The Best of Loudon Wainwright 111, 1982-1986'

Music Club MCCD 166 -CD

This is a budget price, single CD compilation, taking tracks from all three Demon CDs ('Fame and Wealth', 'I'm Alright, and 'More Love Songs').  Also includes an informative little booklet with plenty of photos, a history of Loudon's career and a list of all his albums.

01 - Hard Day On The Planet 12 - The Acid Song
02 - Your Mother And I 13 - Dump The Dog
03 - Reader And Advisor 14 - Career Moves
04 - Cardboard Boxes 15 - Fame And Wealth
05 - One Man Guy 16 - The Grammy Song
06 - I Eat Out 17 - IDTTYWLM
[I Don't Think That Your Wife Likes Me]
07 - Thick And Thin 18 - Ready Or Not (So Ripe)
08 - Westchester County 19 - Synchronicity
09 - I'm Alright 20 - Lost Love
10 - Not John 21 - Unhappy Anniversary
11 - How Old Are You?

Re track 7 (Five Years Old) some of the earlier CDs have 'Thick and Thin' though the liner notes do indeed state 'Five Years Old'.

Did you spot the "Acid Song" lurking in there as a hook for those who already have "More Love Songs" on vinyl or tape? In addition, another mis-titled track in there as well! Anyone out there have a copy? Doug Ashford?

 Grown Man

1995 - 'Grown Man'
Virgin CDV 2789 -CD

The first track was allegedly recorded in a shower with a condom over the mike.  'Treasure Untold' is a rare 'cover version', originally sung by Jimmie Rodgers in the 1920's, 'Father/Daughter Dialogue' is a duet with his daughter Martha, and 'Dreaming' featured in the movie '28 Days'.

01 - The Birthday Present I 09 - IWIWAL [I Wish I Was A Lesbian]
02 - Grown Man 10 - Just A John
03 - That Hospital 11 - I Suppose
04 - Housework 12 - Dreaming
05 - Cobwebs 13 - The End Has Begun
06 - A Year 14 - Human Cannonball
07 - Father / Daughter Dialogue 15 - Treasure Untold
08 - 1994

 Little Ship

1997 - 'Little Ship'
CDV 2644 -CD

Written following a 'breakup' in Loudon's life, this album has some brilliantly written, yet incredibly sad, songs. Tracks like 'O.G.M', 'What Are Families For?', and 'Little Ship'.  When he sings 'So Damm Happy', you just know he isn't really.  'The Birthday Present II' is 'spine chilling'.

01 - Breakfast In Bed 09 - The World
02 - Four Mirrors 10 - What Are Families For?
03 - Mr Ambivalent 11 - Bein' A Dad
04 - OGM [Out Going Message] 12 - The Birthday Present II
05 - Our Own War 13 - I Can't Stand Myself
06 - So Damm Happy 14 - Little Ship
07 - Primrose Hill 15 - A Song
08 - Underwear

All three are "alternative" versions and previously unreleased.
